THE DENTAL CIRCLE - SERVICES
Specialist Gum Treatments
Also known as periodontal treatments, address advanced gum disease (known as periodontal disease) affecting teeth and their supporting structures. Untreated gum disease can severely damage gums and bone, potentially leading to tooth loss.
Suitable for
- Patients with advanced gum disease – those experiencing symptoms like persistent bleeding gums, bad breath, gum recession or loose teeth
- Individuals with complex medical histories, with conditions like diabetes or heart disease that complicate their oral health require specialised gum treatments for better management
- People who have undergone dental implants or surgeries. Ensuring healthy gums around implants or after complex dental procedures often requires care and long term maintenance
- Smokers or former smokers. Smoking is a major risk factor for gum disease and treatments can be tailored to help address the damage caused by long term smoking
Periodontal Treatment
Periodontal treatment aims to resolve severe infections and may prevent tooth loss. Treatments can be provided by either a general dentist or a periodontal specialist.
Nonsurgical Treatments (for less advanced periodontitis):
- Scaling: Removes tartar and bacteria from tooth surfaces and below the gum line using instruments, lasers, or ultrasonic devices.
- Root Planing: Smoothens root surfaces to prevent further tartar build up and helps gums reattach to teeth.
- Antibiotics: Topical (e.g. mouth rinses, gels) or oral antibiotics to control bacterial infections in more acute cases.
Surgical Treatments (for advanced periodontitis):
- Flap Surgery: Surgically lifting the gums allow for effective scaling and reshaping of underlying bone before stitching the tissue back in place.
- Soft Tissue Grafts: Reinforces lost gum tissue using grafts from the patient’s mouth or donors to cover exposed roots and reduce further loss.
- Bone Grafting: Replaces lost bone around tooth roots with grafts to stabilise teeth and promote natural bone regrowth.
- Guided Tissue Regeneration: Places a barrier fabric between bone and tooth to allow bone regrowth without interference from other tissues.
